People In Music History
Copland, Aaron (1900-1990) American composer, pupil of R. Goldmark and (in
Paris) N. Boulanger; also pianist, lecturer, and writer, prominent in general
championing of American music. Born in Brooklyn. His work variously shows an
indebtedness to jazz (Music for the Theatre, 1925), to cowboy songs and similar
indigenous American tunes (ballets Rodeo and Appalachian Spring), and to Latin
American music (El Salon Mexico, clarinet concerto); but elsewhere it is
sometimes completely abstract, fiercely dissonant, and devoid of "popular"
influences -- e.g., piano variations, piano sonata. Other works include opera
The Tender Land, 3 symphonies, Quiet City (orchestral suite), A Lincoln
Portrait (with narrator), piano quartet and other chamber music, film scores.
